The Project for Transportation Reform (PTR), a CNU initiative promoting the implementation of connected, multi-modal street networks as the answer to many of our transportation, safety, land use and urban design problems, has made a great deal of progress since its initiation. Network connectivity has been demonstrated to increase pedestrian safety, increase vehicular capacity, reduce emergency response time, create higher land values, promote economic viability of cities, towns and main streets and contribute to a sense of place. Join us for a working session featuring updates on the Networks Principles. Art Cueto of Alta Planning will give a preview of the September 9-10 Long Beach, CA Transportation Summit.

Since the advent of FHA in the 1930s, federal housing financing regulations have encouraged a separation of residential and commercial uses. Restrictions on the commercial component of space attached and/or adjacent to housing have promoted sprawl as the prevailing pattern of land-use development.
These regulations have left a legacy that still inform financing standards in place by FHA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and HUD’s 221d4 and 220 programs. This session will explore the creation of a new ‘asset class’ that will allow for the successful financing of mixed-use developments and Live/Work/Walk districts – a return to Main St.-style communities.

Can we heal our sprawling communities through retrofit, repair and redevelopment? This working group will review new ideas in sprawl retrofit design, regulation, and implementation to achieve healthier communities. Attendees will discuss approaches to incremental sprawl repair, corridor retrofits, regional strategies and financial approaches building on work completed during the March Retreat in Miami. The session will start with four speed presentations selected through a competition process. Following the speed presentations, initiative members will report on a series of practical Toolkits, newly formed partnerships and an overall strategic plan and next steps for the upcoming year.

AuthentiCity West Palm Beach Competition: Judging Panel

CNU, the City of West Palm Beach, and AuthentiCity have sponsored an open design competition intended to apply CNU’s collective expertise in giving back to the local community. Healthy cities require a diversity of housing options within and adjacent to their centers. West Palm Beach has the distinct advantage of connected in-town neighborhoods, however these connections and neighborhood structures have decayed. We have challenged entrants to propose realistic and incremental solutions to repair and reconnect two of these in-town neighborhoods. Join us for our final judging panel, an open critique of competition submissions by our judging team.
